Wayne Dalton doors are common across West Michigan, and they have one design feature that catches people out: the springs are hidden inside the tube.
Most garage doors carry their torsion springs openly on a shaft above the opening, where you can see them and see when one has broken. Wayne Dalton's TorqueMaster system puts the spring inside a steel tube instead. It is tidier and it contains the spring if it fails, which is a real safety benefit.
The complication is diagnosis. When a TorqueMaster spring breaks there is nothing obvious to look at. The door simply becomes far too heavy and the opener strains or gives up, and there is no visible gap in a coil to point at. Homeowners frequently conclude the opener has failed, replace it, and discover the door is still too heavy, because the actual fault was never the opener.
It also means the repair is a different job. The tube has to come down to get at the spring, and it takes the right replacement parts. A generic torsion spring is not a substitute.
Wayne Dalton doors use their own panel profiles, so a single damaged section has to be matched to the model rather than to a generic equivalent. On a door still in production that is straightforward. On an older or discontinued model, matching can be the thing that decides whether a section replacement is realistic. We will check availability before recommending it rather than after.
If you have a Wayne Dalton door and it has suddenly become very heavy, ask specifically whether the TorqueMaster spring has been checked. It is the single most commonly missed diagnosis on this brand, and it is the reason people end up paying for an opener they did not need.
You usually cannot see it, which is the whole problem. The spring sits inside the tube. The symptom is the door suddenly becoming very heavy to lift by hand and the opener straining or refusing. If your door got heavy overnight, suspect the spring before the opener.
Not as a like-for-like. The TorqueMaster system takes its own parts. Some doors can be converted to a conventional exposed torsion setup, which is occasionally the better long-term option, and we will tell you if yours is a candidate.
Often, if the model is current. Discontinued profiles are harder and sometimes not available. We check availability before recommending a section replacement.
