East Grand Rapids is older, denser and architecturally careful, with a lot of detached garages, narrow drives and doors that need to suit the house rather than just fit the opening.
Much of East Grand Rapids predates the attached garage entirely. Garages sit at the back of the lot, reached by a narrow drive or an alley, and a good number are single width with openings that were never a standard modern size. Some still carry original timber doors, either swing or early sectional.
Two practical things follow. First, access matters: a narrow drive between two houses is not somewhere to unload a full replacement door casually, and it is worth us knowing the layout before the day. Second, measurement matters more than usual. An opening in a garage built in the 1920s is very unlikely to be a catalogue size, and it may not be square either. Anyone quoting a replacement here without measuring is guessing.

A well-built old timber door in sound condition is frequently better made than its modern replacement, and keeping it avoids the problem of finding something that suits the house. Yes. Timber doors are heavier than steel and need springs rated for that weight, which is the detail most often got wrong. Track, rollers, hinges and cables are all serviceable. Structural rot in the bottom rail is the point at which repair stops making sense.
It is common in older East Grand Rapids property and it is not a problem, but it does mean a replacement has to be measured rather than ordered off a chart. Custom width doors are readily available.
